Black-capped Chickadees are beloved visitors to bird feeders in Vermont, and throughout much of the country. For birders in search of rare species, they can be easily tuned out, but delving deeper into their behavior reveals a fascinating world. Black-capped Chickadees are social creatures, sticking together in groups through the winter. Nevertheless, an undercurrent of conflict runs amongst companions, and apparent friends can quickly become bitter enemies. We’ll take an intimate look into the lives of Black-capped Chickadees, as we walk through their yearly cycle. We’ll explore insights into several aspects of chickadee behavior, including flocking and social behavior, interactions at bird feeders, communication, songs, and breeding behavior. All will surely provide a fresh perspective while watching your bird feeder.

Dr. David Hof has spent the past two decades doing extensive birding and field work throughout North and South America. He completed his doctorate at UMass Amherst, where he specialized in animal behavior and communication. His research largely focuses on the singing behavior of warblers, but he also has a love for chickadees and has dabbled in chickadee research. He now makes his home in Ripton, VT, and runs a bird tour operation, New England Bird Tours.
