About the Green Mountain Audubon Society
The Green Mountain Audubon Society was founded in 1962 as an independent Vermont corporation and became a chapter of the National Audubon Society to promote environmental education, wildlife protection and land conservation.
The National Audubon Society, named in memory of naturalist and painter John J. Audubon (1785-1851), was established in 1905 to protect American birds. The Green Mountain Audubon Society acquired the Nature Center in 1964. The original Nature Center — house, barn and 150-acre farm — is located in Huntington, Vermont and was a generous gift of Christine Hires. Over the years, this legacy has grown to include 255 acres supported by more than 1000 Audubon members throughout northwestern Vermont. The Nature Center is now leased and operated by Audubon Vermont. To take a tour of the Green Mountain Audubon Center click the Nature Walk link from the tool bar at the top of this page.
We sponsor a variety of field trips and programs throughout the year. Our upcoming events are listed at the Calendar of Events page and on our Home page. Also, we organize the Christmas Bird Count for the Burlington area. Our Christmas Bird Count, which is linked to Audubon groups throughout the country, helps researchers assess the population size and health of many bird species nationwide.
